Gravity Septic Fields: Excavation & Repairs in Prince George

A conventional septic system commonly combines a tank with a soil dispersal field. Understanding the buried connections helps you describe the problem and plan the appropriate excavation.

EXCAVATOR-BASED WORK · NO TANK PUMPING

Tank, pipe and field are separate parts

The tank provides primary treatment, while the dispersal field uses the soil environment as part of treatment and dispersal. In a gravity layout, elevation and the path of the buried piping are central to how wastewater moves through the system.

A problem at the house-to-tank line, tank outlet or field does not automatically mean every component has failed. Available plans and the location of any confirmed defect help separate the scopes.

Excavation questions to ask

  • Which run or component has been identified as the problem?
  • Is the work a localised pipe repair or replacement of a field section?
  • What soil and site information is available?
  • Can the machine access the work without crossing or disturbing parts being retained?
  • Who is responsible for the assessment and any required design?

What does a gravity septic field cost?

Tim’s typical gravity-field installation range is $25,000–$35,000 CAD. A localised pipe repair is a different scope. Confirm site requirements, inclusions and applicable tax in your estimate.

Local context

Northern Health’s subdivision checklist explicitly considers Type 1 trench dispersal areas, subject to site assessment. That establishes a relevant local system category, not a guarantee that a particular property is suitable.

If you are unsure of your layout, tell Tim what records you have and what another provider has found. Do not assume the system is gravity-fed just because the field is downhill.

A FEW PRACTICAL ANSWERS

Before the digging starts.

Is Type 1 the same as gravity?

No. Type 1 describes treatment by a septic tank; gravity describes how flow moves. Treatment type and dispersal layout are different pieces of information.

Does a backup prove the field has failed?

No. A blockage, damaged pipe or another fault may be involved. Identify the cause before agreeing excavation.
